  Research Statement

My research primarily focuses on how and why individuals use technology, the attributes of technology that influence such usage, and other variables associated with the interaction between individuals and technology. One theme of this stream of research is on the negative aspects of technology usage. In the past three years, my research has broadened into two additional areas: the role of information technology (IT) professionals in an organization, and methodological interests. I am fortunate to work with a number of great colleagues and graduate students in the following specific projects:

1.Supporting Services Functionality - using technology as a tool for online value-added service (e.g. recommendation agents)

    a. Consumer context with Izak Benbasat and Sameh Al-Natour
    b. E-government context with Izak Benbasat and Chee Wee Tan
    c. Business-to-Business context with Izak Benbasat and Cagri Guvence-Rodoper

    2. The Role of Similarity in Human Computer Interaction with Izak Benbasat and Sameh Al-Natour - how do individuals respond to interfaces that are more like themselves in terms of characteristics such as personality and decision making?

    3. Online Self Service with Izak Benbasat and David Xu - Does an individual want automated assistance, or do they prefer to do for themselves (think of checking in for a flight via a kiosk or with a gate agent)

    4. Technology Usage Inhibitors with Andrew Schwarz - what factors uniquely dissuade people from using technology?

    5. Online Service Failure and Recovery with Chee Wee Tan and Izak Benbasat

    6. Technology Induced Stress/Strain - what are the negative effects of technology usage?

    7. Emotions and technology usage with Geneviève Bassellier - going beyond cognitive perceptions alone to explain use

    8. Technology and Immoral Behavior with Karl Aquino and David Xu - does technology facilitate the darker side of human interaction? Some people “pirate” music online yet would never steal a CD from an offline store.

    9. The role of the IT professional in the organization - with Geneviève Bassellier. How do IT professionals and business employees work together, trust one another, learn from one another? How can the IT professional better be leveraged in the firm as an internal customer service provider?

    10. Quantitative Methods – Geneviève Bassellier and I have been working on topics related to formatively measured constructs as employed in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).
